Mark Cutifani and Peter Rozenauers will join Northern Star Resources as independent non-executive directors on October 1, 2026, the Australian gold producer said on September 14. The appointments follow the board's evaluation of candidates put forward by Elliott Investment Management, one of the company's largest shareholders.
Bloomberg reported the additions as a board expansion shaped by Elliott's campaign; Northern Star's ASX announcement confirms the appointments and says shareholders will be asked to reappoint Cutifani and Rozenauers at the November 18 annual meeting. The board had already appointed Jeff Quartermaine and Terry Bowen as independent directors in its succession-planning process.
A mining veteran returns to gold
Cutifani brings almost five decades in mining and more than four decades in senior executive and operational roles. He led Anglo American as chief executive for more than nine years and previously ran AngloGold Ashanti for more than five years. He also described the Northern Star seat as a return to the gold sector and a homecoming of sorts: he was the inaugural general manager involved in establishing the Kalgoorlie Superpit in 1989.
Northern Star chairman Michael Chaney said the new directors would give the board a mix of skills to work with incoming senior leadership under Suresh Vadnagra. The appointments therefore do two jobs at once: respond to a shareholder-led board conversation and add operating experience as the company works through its next leadership phase.
