Michele Harradence will succeed Greg Ebel as CEO of Enbridge on January 1

Enbridge's board named the head of its gas distribution and storage business as the Canadian pipeline giant's next chief executive, effective at the start of 2027; Ebel will advise the board and Harradence through May.

Michele Harradence will become chief executive officer of Enbridge Inc. on January 1, 2027, succeeding Greg Ebel, the Calgary-based pipeline company said on September 8. Harradence has led Enbridge's gas distribution and storage business since 2022 and currently serves as executive vice-president and president of that unit.

Ebel, who has led Enbridge since 2023 after joining the board in 2017, will retire at the end of the year and continue as an adviser to the board and to Harradence through May 2027. Board chair Steve Williams said the board "has tremendous confidence in Michele and the experience, judgment and strategic leadership she brings to the role of CEO."

A gas-utilities operator takes the top job

Harradence's promotion sends a signal about where Enbridge sees its next leg of growth. The company operates North America's largest liquids pipeline system, moving the bulk of Canada's crude oil, but has spent the past two years expanding aggressively in natural-gas infrastructure and utilities. Its acquisition of three U.S. gas utilities from Dominion Energy, completed in 2024, made Enbridge the largest natural-gas utility platform on the continent, serving roughly 7.2 million customers.

The C$41 billion backlog she inherits

Harradence takes over a portfolio with a secured growth backlog of C$41 billion across liquids pipelines, gas transmission, utilities and renewable power. In her own statement, she said Enbridge "is exceptionally well positioned, with a portfolio of world-class assets, a strong financial foundation and growth opportunities across all our businesses." Ebel will remain on the board through December 31 and hand over the CEO seat at the turn of the year.
