General Mills named Chief Operating Officer Dana McNabb as its next chief executive, effective January 1, 2027, succeeding Jeff Harmening, who will become executive chair, according to Reuters and the company’s announcement. The company said its board unanimously elected McNabb after a multi-year succession-planning process.

An internal leader with a broad operating brief

McNabb currently serves as COO and has led General Mills’ four operating segments and several central functions. The company lists North America Retail, North America Pet, North America Foodservice and International among the segments under her remit, alongside sales, supply chain, and innovation, technology and quality. She joined General Mills in 1999 and has held roles across the business.

The board’s decision pairs a change at the top with a defined governance transition. Harmening will become executive chair on the same January 1 date. The company describes the selection as the outcome of a “robust, multi-year succession planning process.” Maria Henry, the board’s independent lead director, said McNabb has contributed across the company and has a deep understanding of its consumers, brands and industry.

That internal record gives the new CEO a broad starting portfolio rather than a single-function mandate. McNabb has overseen operations across product categories and geographies, and the company’s release says she will lead its next phase of growth and value creation. The announcement does not specify a separate interim period or changes to the operating-segment structure.

Reuters placed General Mills’ announcement among a wider run of CEO changes at global consumer-goods companies, describing the sector as navigating tariff pressures and uneven consumer spending. That is the backdrop Reuters chose for its roundup; General Mills itself emphasized its succession process and McNabb’s track record rather than assigning the transition to any one market factor.

The move is a useful contrast with Britannia’s recent leadership reshuffle, where a food producer split expanded operating responsibilities between a deputy managing director and a new CFO. General Mills, by comparison, has put a long-serving operating executive into the CEO role while moving its current chief to the board chair.
