Talen names Terry Nutt to succeed Mac McFarland as CEO

Talen Energy named Terry Nutt its next chief executive officer, effective January 1, 2027, succeeding Mac McFarland, as Reuters reported and the company’s investor-relations announcement confirms. Nutt is currently Talen’s president and will also join its board when he takes the CEO role.

A handoff planned in stages

McFarland will remain CEO and a board member through December 31. He will then serve as a senior adviser until his planned retirement in March 2027. Talen says the intervening period is meant to support an orderly handoff and continuity in strategy, operations and capital allocation. The roles are therefore changing on a defined timetable rather than through an immediate departure.

Nutt’s path at Talen has covered both finance and operating leadership. He became CFO in July 2023, moved into the presidency in December 2025, and now steps into the top job. The company says he oversees operations, commercial activities, administrative functions and external affairs as president. Before joining Talen, he was CFO and managing director of EDF Trading North America from 2018 to 2023, and earlier held senior finance and risk-management roles at Vistra and predecessor entities. Talen says he has more than 25 years’ experience in the deregulated energy industry.

The board’s stated case for the appointment is continuity with a broader remit. Chair Stephen Schaefer pointed to Nutt’s knowledge of Talen’s assets, people and strategy, and his work across operations, commercial activity and capital allocation. Nutt’s own description of the first-order agenda is concrete: safe and reliable operations, execution of the company’s “flywheel strategy,” and disciplined capital allocation.

That agenda sits inside an energy company that operates power infrastructure in U.S. wholesale markets. Talen describes a fleet of about 15.5 gigawatts and says it is positioning for demand from digital infrastructure, including data centers. The leadership announcement also arrived alongside capital-return plans; the succession schedule is separately clear: McFarland remains available through the transition, while Nutt moves from president into the CEO and board roles.

For readers following senior moves across the energy sector, the handoff connects with EOG’s recent CFO succession, another case where an internal leader is taking on a wider finance-and-operations brief.
