Bill Walker is now chief executive officer of Cineplex, succeeding Ellis Jacob as the Canadian cinema chain begins a strategic review that could include a sale. Walker took the role after leading Landmark Cinemas and overseeing its 2017 sale to Kinepolis.
The board has hired Goldman Sachs and TD Securities as co-financial advisers and Goodmans LLP as legal counsel. Jacob, who led Cineplex for more than two decades, will stay on as a special adviser to the board through the end of 2026.
A new CEO, a deliberately open process
The Globe and Mail reported that the review will consider a range of alternatives, including a potential sale, without setting a timeline. Walker said his task is to oversee the company while the board evaluates the options, not to pre-judge the outcome.
CBC News quoted Walker’s focus on operational excellence, guest experiences and outcomes for shareholders “regardless of the outcome” of the review. The report also noted his nine years leading Landmark and the relevance of that company’s sale to his new brief.
Cineplex’s announcement described the process as an effort to evaluate opportunities to enhance and maximize value for shareholders. The governance structure is clear: Walker runs the business, Jacob remains close to the board, and advisers are in place while the company considers its next chapter.
