Zurich names Alex Wells CEO of its U.S. business

Alex Wells is the new chief executive officer of Zurich U.S. and a member of Zurich Insurance Group’s executive committee, after Zurich confirmed the appointment. MarketWatch reported that the executive-committee appointment followed his selection to lead the insurer’s U.S. business. Zurich’s board approved the move on September 22, with the group role effective immediately.

Wells moves into the group’s senior leadership after running the U.S. Middle Market, Programs, Captives and Direct Markets businesses. Zurich did not name a predecessor in the announcement, but it did make the operating logic clear: Wells had successfully led the business to date and would now carry that understanding into the U.S. CEO role and the wider executive committee.

An internal step-up with a broad operating brief

Wells joined Zurich in 2020 and brings more than 30 years of insurance experience across underwriting, distribution, operations and business management. That mix matters in a role that sits between a large national market and a global group: the mandate is not simply to represent the U.S. business, but to connect its operating knowledge with group-level decisions.

The appointment also extends a leadership thread already visible at Zurich. Wells takes over the U.S. role after Sierra Signorelli moved to AIG, but the available announcement is focused on Wells’s own experience and on the board’s confidence in his record. There is no need to infer a broader strategy beyond what the company states.

The useful forward point is immediate rather than speculative: Wells’s group executive-committee membership takes effect now, while the U.S. CEO role gives him a clear platform to carry his underwriting and distribution experience across Zurich’s largest operating conversations. It follows Sierra Signorelli’s move back to AIG, a related transition in which portable insurance expertise shaped the next seat.
