Asda names David Potts CEO to lead its next phase

Asda named David Potts group chief executive on Nov. 3, putting the former Morrisons leader in the post with immediate effect, according to Reuters and Bloomberg. The move separates the operating job from the chair: Allan Leighton, who has led Asda as executive chairman since 2024, will become non-executive group chairman and focus on long-term direction.

Potts brings a long record in British grocery retail. He began on Tesco’s shop floor at 16, then rose through roles that included leading Tesco operations in the UK, Ireland and Asia. He became Morrisons chief executive in 2015 and left in 2023. Retail Gazette reports that his tenure included a business turnaround, expansion of wholesale and convenience operations, and the retailer’s shift to private ownership. That history gives Asda an operator who has managed several parts of the supermarket business, rather than a first-time retail chief.

At Asda, the handoff follows a planned change in roles for Leighton rather than a sudden exit. He is expected to remain focused on the retailer’s long-term strategic direction as Potts takes day-to-day leadership. Leighton said Asda’s Formula for Growth strategy had helped stabilize the business, return it to some growth and broaden the proposition beyond a conventional supermarket. The next phase therefore sits with Potts, while the stated strategic frame remains with Leighton.

Potts has pointed to value and the customer experience as immediate priorities. Retail Gazette reported that he wants improvements shoppers can see and feel in their spending and that Asda should keep prices low during the Christmas trading period. He also praised the company’s colleagues and said he was proud to have been asked to lead them. These comments put the focus on where the transition should be visible: the weekly shop, everyday prices and the service customers experience in stores. Leighton, for his part, said Potts’s experience was what Asda needed for the next stage of its transformation.

Readers following retail leadership will find a related governance move in Encafeinados’ recent coverage of Stacy Taffet joining Kohl’s board. The roles differ, but both changes put senior leadership in view at large retailers. Potts’s initial remit is clear: run the business, continue the retailer’s stated transformation agenda and keep customer value in focus through the year-end trading period. The sources do not name another deadline beyond his immediate start and the Christmas priorities he outlined.
