Info Edge (India) said on October 28 that founder Sanjeev Bikhchandani will take over as executive vice chairman, managing director and group CEO on December 3, replacing Hitesh Oberoi, according to Business Standard and Moneycontrol. The appointments are subject to shareholder approval. Oberoi is expected to leave the managing director and CEO roles at the close of December 2 and join the board the following day as a non-executive, non-independent director, also subject to approval.
The company’s notice makes this a planned handoff rather than an immediate vacancy. Oberoi has been with Info Edge for nearly 27 years and has served as managing director and CEO. The company said he wants to spend more time on higher education, entrepreneurship, institution building, investing and philanthropy, as well as with his family. In comments carried by the outlets, Oberoi described the timing as the right moment to step back from full-time operating work while remaining available to the company in a board role if shareholders approve.
A founder returns to operating leadership
Bikhchandani currently serves as founder and vice chairman. His appointment would put the founder back in the group’s senior operating posts, while Oberoi would move from management to the board. The company scheduled Bikhchandani’s term through April 26, 2031, in line with his existing term as a director. Info Edge is the parent of Naukri.com, and the transition therefore reaches across a business built over several decades rather than a single operating unit.
The handoff follows another CEO succession covered yesterday, when Lamda Development named Evi Kostaki as its next CEO. That move centers on a successor within the company; Info Edge is bringing its founder into the operating seat. The distinction is in the path to the top role, not a claim that one company’s approach predicts the other’s outcome.
The next formal step is shareholder approval. If it is secured, Bikhchandani’s appointment begins December 3 and Oberoi’s board transition starts the same day. Until then, Oberoi remains managing director and CEO, leaving a defined interval between announcement and handover.
That timetable gives the board and shareholders a defined period to consider the proposed appointments while keeping the handoff conditional until the vote. It also leaves a clear distinction between the two roles: Bikhchandani would return to executive leadership, while Oberoi could contribute institutional knowledge from a non-executive seat. The plan preserves a place for both leaders, subject to shareholder approval.
