John L. Calmes Jr. is now president and chief executive officer of World Acceptance Corporation, effective September 21, after the board elevated the company’s longtime finance and strategy chief. World Acceptance’s announcement names Calmes’s prior role as executive vice president, chief financial and strategy officer, and treasurer; MarketWatch adds that he joined the company in 2013 and previously worked at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ and PwC.
The change is less a reset than a handoff from the finance seat to the operating seat. Calmes takes over the principal executive officer role from J. Tobin Turner, while Scott McIntyre moves into the principal financial officer role. That continuity matters at a company with more than six decades of lending history and a leadership brief centered on serving customers while maintaining financial discipline.

Board chairman Ken Bramlett Jr. said Calmes understands the business, has helped sustain its financial discipline and can “hit the ground running.” Calmes said he was honored by the board’s confidence and focused on the company’s next chapter. The emphasis is practical: keep the operation close to customers, build on the existing foundation and deliver results for stakeholders.
The appointment belongs to the same orderly succession pattern we have been following in ASX’s finance handoff to Keir Barnes, where the value of an internal transition was also the context carried by the incoming executive. For World Acceptance, the first test is simply whether the new CEO can turn that financial fluency into company-wide execution.
